CD: Yusa: Haiku
The latest offering from Cuban singer/songwriter Yusa. In contrast to Yusa’s last album ‘Breathe’ this third CD is pared down – in the spirit of the minimal Japanese poetic form, which provides the album title. ‘Haiku’ is a collection of intimate (‘intimista’) songs of love. Inspired by the Brazilian ‘tropicalia’ sound of Caetano Veloso and others, Yusa fuses traditional AfroCuban elements from rumba to conga with simple and direct songwriting to produce a distinctly Cuban supreme chillout album.

In contrast to Yusa’s last album ‘Breathe’ this third CD is pared down – in the spirit of the minimal Japanese poetic form, which provides the album title. ‘Haiku’ is a collection of intimate (‘intimista’) songs of love. Yusa plays most of the instruments herself, bass, trés, percussion and electric piano, but this is all about the songs – fragile and sensual, written by her and sang sublimely.
This is a successful collaboration with Brazilian producer Alê Siqueira who describes working with Yusa as “amar un sueño, parar un hijo – bringing life to a dream, giving birth to a child.”
