CD: Telmary: A Diario
A Diario, the incredible debut album of the poetess and rapper Telmary Diaz, constitutes one of the most remarkable achievements of the new wave of Cuban music. It champions the integration of diverse musical languages and styles, mostly contemporary, into an aggregate where fusion is a virtue and orthodox approaches are broken up. The album uses Hip Hop as the framework for her controversial and combative lyrics with a reformist musical ethos

The eagerly anticipated debut album from one of Cuba’s brightest talents certainly does not disappoint. Although part of Havana’s exciting Hip Hop scene, Telmary Díaz has distinguished herself from other artists through her work in Interactivo, a collective of Cuban musicians and singers drawn from different musical backgrounds. It is no surprise therefore that A Diario is more than a Hip Hop album. Its greatest achievement is the bringing together of diverse musical expressions to create a unique and musically stimulating fusion. Ranging from the opening afro-cuban sounding Rezo a Elegguá (prayer to Elegguá) to the guaracha on Que equivoca’o (How wrong), to the re –working of the Los Van Van salsa classic Marilu all the way to the flamenco influenced Sueño Brujo, a collaboration with the Spanish group Ojos de Brujo, there is something for everyone. Drawing on so many different styles could make the album sound disjointed but Telmary’s combative and versatile lyrics in both Spanish and English stamp their authority on the music and give the work its direction. The project is enriched by strong performances from other up-and-coming stars Kumar and William Vivianco as well as soneros Mayito Rivera and Francis del Río. As the artist herself states on Mr God, she may not be famous yet but soon you are bound to “come to my flow”.
