Possibly the best offering yet form Candido Fabre and his band – a superb collection of bittersweet songs mostly written and arranged by Fabre himself, partly based on his feelings about not abandoning Cuba in uncertain times, unlike some of his fellow artists.
Considered one of the most creative soneros (singers of Cuban son) in Latin America with his special talent for improvisation, Fabre has also been a prolific songwriter since he started performing with the great Orquesta Original de Manzanillo in the 1970s, making the typical dance band sound of Oriente (the Eastern province of Cuba). The band here is a classic Oriente ‘charanga’ line up with flute and violin as well as a soaring trumpet, piano, bass, tres guitar and full percussion; and creates a perfect smooth and swinging ground for Fabre’s distinctive passionate, gravel voice. Dance to it and be transported to the music houses of Santiago, where the whole album was recorded.
