This original and exciting film by an independent UK production company that has made films for the BBC and Channel 4, takes us on a journey of discovery through the lives of ordinary Cubans. In a series of frank interviews across the island we hear the broadest range of perspectives on life in Cuba and the revolution, as the filmmakers pursue the simple question: Can the revolution survive after the death of Fidel Castro?
Hasta Siempre boldly explores issues such as racial discrimination, prostitution, consumerism, tourism and the re-emerging class divisions. Cubans speak openly about these issues and offer some interesting insights. Many of those interviewed had genuine criticisms of some aspects of the reality in Cuba. Some criticise government among other things whilst most are highly critical of US aggression, the blockade and the hardship it causes.
What is particularly refreshingly original about Hasta Siempre is that we hear the views of young people. From young children saying what they want to be when they grow up to young adults speaking about Hip Hop culture and their desire to go to the USA.
What is unmistakable in watching Hasta Siempre is the love that Cubans have for their country and an even greater love for humanity. One also gets a real feel for their sense of collective ownership of the revolution and pride in what the revolution has achieved over the years.
Hasta Siempre is a must-see and let’s hope that Rice’n’peas visit Cuba again to do another brilliant documentary
