Azúcar y Sal / Sugar and Salt
Documentary by Tobias Kriele & Martin Broschwitz, 2016, English subtitles, 32 mins.
Cuban women, Angela, Ana, Elena and Maria met during the revolution and became lifelong friends. They reflect on the last 50 years, on their individual roles and support for the revolution and their lives before 1959, the importance of continuing the revolution and their hopes for the future.
All four were too young to take up arms to fight but when the call came to help their country through either defence or the literacy campaign, none of them had any hesitation. Three of them joined the literacy campaign and went into the Sierra Maestra, while Ana had military training.
Each of them describes how their lives changed, particularly with regard to women’s roles in the family. They point to examples of men looking after the children and doing domestic tasks in a way that was not acceptable when they were young and had families. The four women talk about the hardships of the ‘special period’ and how many people left Cuba to go to the US. They all believe that the revolution should be defended through good and bad times because Cuba will be stronger in the end.
Their commitment to the revolution is unswerving and their discussions about politics and expression of their opinions is central to that support and to their lasting friendships. They are all happy, contented and optimistic women, looking forward to ‘bigger’ events happening in the future. They believe if Cuba is ever attacked, the youth will follow in their example and defend the revolution.
The film is an uplifting and positive portrayal of the impact the revolution has had on four Cuban women and continues to have on the lives of others.
