Lovers of Caribbean poetry will embrace this anthology of poems by the winner of Cuba’s National Literacy prize in 2001. Nancy Morejón is considered one Cuba’s finest living poets, with the distinction of being the first black woman to achieve critical acclaim for her art. Morejón is one of only five women to have received this honour during the twenty odd years of the prize’s history. She follows in the footsteps of Nicolás Guillén, the inaugural winner of 1983.Indeed, Nancy Morejón continues Guillén’s legacy of Afro-Cubanism.
The book contains over sixty poems, almost half of which explore the complexities of being black in a racist world, whether the setting is Santiago,Pretoris or New York.
The title poem, Black Woman, closes the anthology with a harrowing account of a slave’s ocean voyage, suffering, rebellion and escape, culminating in a celebration of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution.
Many of Morejón’s poems address political issues. As in real life, there are times when it is impossible to separate political history from the way it shapes the experience of being non-white.
Black Women and Other Poems gives readers a great opportunity to experience the pleasure of Morejón’s vibrant poetic voice.
