Germán Sánchez, the Cuban ambassador to Venezuela since 1994, has brought together speeches and writings about both Cuba and Venezuela presented in different parts of Venezuela.
He argues clearly why the Cuban revolution cannot be repeated in Venezuela and refutes the allegation that Cuba is trying to “Cubanise” Venezuela through its doctors and sports instructors.
A highlight of the book is the excellent summary of the myriad of ways in which Cuba and Venezuela are cooperating in almost all economic and social spheres since the establishment of ALBA in December 2004
Another vivid part of the book is the blow-by-blow description and transcript of the negotiations between Germán Sánchez and the Venezuelan authority representatives in the siege of the Cuban embassy during the attempted coup of April 2002. Over 1,000 people besieged the embassy, attacking their cars, threatening to break in, throwing Molotov cocktails and petrol bombs and firing in the air. The electricity and water were cut off for four days despite the women and children in residence. Fidel was consulted and advised not to open the door but to invite the authorities to enter the embassy by a ladder over the wall to negotiate. Sánchez made it clear that the Cubans were prepared to defend the embassy with their lives.
A fascinating read.
