This volume is a collection of eight speeches given by Che Guevara to University students and other youth groups between the years 1959 and 1964. It also includes a speech by Fidel Castro given in tribute to Che in the city of Santa Clara in 1997, the year the remains of the iconic revolutionary were brought home to Cuba from Bolivia.

In this collection of speeches, Che never talks down to his audience, but speaks as an equal with the youth of Cuba and the world. He sets an example to his audience, urging young people to rise to the level of revolutionary activity and scientific thought absolutely vital to confront and resolve the historic contradictions of capitalism that threaten the very future of humanity.

Throughout these speeches Che extols youth to work both physically and mentally, to be disciplined and committed. He urges them to become revolutionaries of action, fearlessly taking their place in the vanguard on the front lines of struggles, both small and large. He encourages them, as they grow and change through these experiences, to become avid readers and to study intently. He implores them to absorb and to make their own, the scientific and cultural achievements not only of their own people, but of all previous civilisations. Che asks youth to be revolutionary combatants, knowing that a different kind of society can be born only out of struggles by men and women prepared to put their very lives and their lifetimes on the lines for it. He appeals to them to politicise the work of the organisations and institutions they are part of, and in the process to politicise themselves. Finally his message is to strife to become a different type of human being and to transform their world.

For readers who are unfamiliar with many of the names and historical events referred to by Che in his speeches the glossary in the book will prove helpful
